Because pick draw format ropings are becoming more popular in Ohio I thought it would be a good idea to explain some of the aspects of these formats in order to help eliminate some confusion. I will do my best to try and clearly define the following terms.

Pick / Draw Roping: Refers to how the event is formatted. For instance, Pick 1 draw 2 simply means that an individual contestant may pick 1 partner for the event and the other two partners will be drawn for them. In most cases the producer allows ropers to draw all of their runs if they don't have access to a partner and this is referenced by stating "Draw all". So the above roping would be advertised as "Pick 1 Draw 2 or Draw all 3.

Drawpot Roping: This is the term used to describe a format in which a contestant can enter on the head side, heel side or both and his/her partners will be drawn by the producer. These events are usually capped in order to even out the randomness of the draw.

Extra runs and why they exist: Whenever a producer has an event where teams are drawn, there is inevitably going to be more contestants on one side or the other (headers/heelers). In order for every contestant to draw a partner for all of his/her runs, "extra runs" are given to randomly picked contestants on the side that has the least participants. For instance, there are 20 headers and 17 heelers entered in the event. The producer needs to come up with 3 more heelers in order to create an even amount of teams. Those heelers will be drawn at random from the pool of the 17 existing heelers. And that's why there are extra runs in a pick/draw or drawpot roping.

Payment option for extra runs: A lot of you who have been to my ropings have questioned the payment option for extra runs. I hope this helps eliminates some of the confusion. (I will use the 20 header and 17 heeler example from above.) I need to come up with 3 more heelers to even out the roping at 20 per side. I randomly draw Bill, Tom and Ed from my existing 17 heelers. The entry fees for my ropings are based on $40.00 a team or $20.00 per side. I show Bill, Tom and Ed the partners that they have been selected to rope with and then give them the option of paying their side of the entry which is $20.00. If any or all decide to pay for that extra run and end up placing in the roping they will collect their entire half of the team winnings. If any or all of them opt not to pay the extra $20.00 and end up placing in the roping they will only be entitled to 50% of their half of the team winnings and the balance of those winnings reverts to the producer. No one should ever be required to pay for an extra run. No contestant who receives an extra run should feel obligated to pay for it. It is simply your decision to make for whatever reason you decide.

I hope this helps!! E-mail any question to otr@zoominternet.net and I will try to get you an answer!!
